The northwest Phoenix metropolitan area, home to 375,000 residents including 100,000 seniors living in the age-restricted areas of Sun City, Sun City West, Sun City Grand and neighboring areas, is sorely lacking in public transportation services. To compound this issue, in 2010, a local nonprofit transportation agency serving seniors in the area was forced to close its doors. Since then, Maricopa County and local cities have responded with an expansion of Dial-A-Ride services but a lack ofawareness about existing resources, as well as gaps in service, remain. A 2013 community survey of seniors confirmed that availability of transportation remains a top concern for the area.

Two local nonprofits with a combined history of serving the Northwest Valley for over 85 years, Benevilla and Sun Health, worked together to create Northwest Valley Connect (NVC) to improve coordination and awareness of transportation resources as well as assure that adequate transportation options are available to meet the community’s needs. NVC was incorporated in March 2014 and launched its service to the community in September 2014.
